made me chuckle. One Dmitry Grinberg modified a Linux kernel to run on an i4004.
The processor was released in 1971. Linux didn't appear until 1991.

He got it to boot in 4.76 days after cutting it down from 8.4 days.
A simple directory listing took 16 hours.

We need these Dmitrys.

Cleaned up the URL.

Linux takes 4.76 days to boot on an ancient Intel 4004 CPU — CPU precedes the OS by 20 years.

That is a pretty nasty little chip. Not worth more than $1.59

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_4004

46,250 to 92,500 instructions per second

That's barely calculator materials (suited to the
building of calculators, not general purpose computers).
They used to make calculators out of 4 bit chipsets,
but at least they had an excuse for going that slow (save power).
The 4004 was supposed to be better than that. I bet even
the calculator chipsets had more transistors than that.

That project is more ambitious than you think. The only
way to make it even more impressive, would be to build
it out of cracker crumbs.

*******

When you have an article link like that, quite frequently you can
cut the link off at the question mark. Just after the "20-years"
That's because materials after a question mark, may be
tracking materials.

It's the same with Amazon links.

Sure, we never can waste enough time and manpower.
